In the wine rating Maroni relies on a 3x33 points scheme, thus awarding a maximum of 99 points. 33 each fall on concentration, balance and clarity. Price also plays a role for Maroni, which is why even inexpensive wines can rise to the spheres of 95 points and more with him.

A top wine according to Luca Maroni is powerful and mighty, harmonious as well as soft and has an intense, clear fruit. Just typical Italian wine. Countless drops at numerous tastings. In order to approach this quantity systematically, the wine expert and wine writer developed his own evaluation method, which he publishes annually in the Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani. In addition, the wine evaluations can be found in reduced form on the website lucamaroni.com .

The scoring system of Luca Maroni

To obtain the maximum score of 99, the wine must convince in the eyes of Luca Maroni in three categories: texture, balance and integrity. Maroni's approach is a scientific one. His findings can be substantiated both sensorially and analytically. The somewhat sober formula "Index of Fruit Quality = Texture + Balance + Integrity" provides insight into liquid pleasure, with consideration for a variety of elements.

In each category, it is possible for each wine to receive a maximum of 33 points, so that in the end, according to Maroni's formula, at best 99 points crown the tasting.

What do the Maroni points mean?

Since 100 points would represent the perfect wine, Luca Maroni does not award them, since a better wine could always exist.

Wines with a score of 84 to 99 have clear indications of the so-called Fruit Grade - the quality of the fruit. This is always in the foreground for Luca Maroni. All wines with 84 points and up have excellent quality in terms of Fruit Grade. They reflect both the grape variety and the origin in a first-class way.

Wines with a score of 74 to 83 are clear buy recommendations for Luca Maroni.

The three pillars of the rating system

Each category, in its own way, generates sensations that the wine evokes.

Texture is the totality of all the substances that make up a wine - the extract, minus water, alcohol and substances that evaporate due to heat. A high texture or consistency is rich in color, aroma as well as flavor and indicates a dense texture.

Balance requires the wine to be in harmony and neither too acidic, overripe nor bitter.

Integrity refers to purity and freshness. This means that the wine must not have aromas that are atypical of grape varieties or the oenological transformation. In addition, the wine must not have any defects. On the whole, it can be said that the faster and more carefully a wine passes through the production process, the higher the integrity.
